Older people tend to be happier than younger people. The level of happiness also increases with age, a study in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry reports. Researchers found that although there is a decline in physical and cognitive abilities, there is an increase in overall life satisfaction, happiness and well-being. Older adults also have lower levels of anxiety, depression and stress. There are several factors that help to explain this. As we get older we become wiser and thus make better decisions. Older adults are not as influenced by peer pressure and what others think about them. They have more control over their emotions and “don’t sweat the small stuff”. Older adults are usually financially secure. They are also not as selfish and enjoy doing things for others. Finally, as we age we know ourselves better and make better life choices.
